Who knew tape creates x-rays

October 30th, 2008 · No Comments

WASHINGTON (Reuters) –
Researchers have found a new "see-through" use for clear sticky tape — it produces X-rays when it is peeled off the roll.

The report in the journal Nature confirms a theory dating back to 1930 — that the process of peeling the tape releases energy not only in the form of a flash of visible light, but also an X-ray.

Many children hiding in closets have demonstrated that unwinding sticky tape produces sparks of light. The phenomenon is called triboluminescence and is caused by the movement of one surface against another.

Carlos Camara of University of California, Los Angeles and colleagues used a motorized peeling machine to unwind a roll of tape in a vacuum.

They generated enough X-rays to show the bones inside their fingers.

"The tape has to be in the vacuum. Your hand can be outside," Camara said in a telephone interview on Thursday.

"If you unroll the tape on your office desk in ambient conditions you only get visible light. You don't get X-rays," he added. This is because gases in the air slow down the electrons that produce the X-rays.

"What always makes X-rays in general is electrons that are moving very fast and suddenly get stopped," Camara, a physicist, said.

"They are flying from one side of the tape to the other as you separate them. You get something like a miniature lightning strike."

This property might be used to make nuclear fusion, Camara and his team said. All it would take is about 10 times as much energy as was produced during the experiment, he said.

It might be possible to unroll the tape even faster to get the effect, Camara said.

"It's just an energy issue. We have managed to get X-rays with this. If you could go another factor of 10 you could get that much more energy and fusion would be proof of that much energy," he said.

This would not be the kind of nuclear fusion that produces energy, or an explosion. Unrolling the tape will require putting in more energy than would be produced, Camara said.

"Obtaining nuclear fusion in the lab is not that hard. What is really hard is obtaining excess energy from nuclear fusion," he said.

So-called tabletop nuclear fusion was achieved in 2005 — but using conventional electricity that required more energy going in that was produced by the reaction.

McALLEN, Texas (AP) — Customs inspectors scored the makings of a barbecue when a 21-year-old South Texas woman declared several soiled baby diapers at a U.S.-Mexico border crossing.

Suspicious of the chunky diapers, inspectors with U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the international bridge in Hidalgo found several links of spicy pork sausage, or chorizo, inside. The diapers had been folded to look soiled, according to a customs agency statement.

The Mission resident, who was not identified after the Friday night incident, was fined $300 and her chorizo was seized.

SYDNEY (Reuters) - A group of boys who stole a golf buggy from a resort in northern Australia sparked a low-speed highway chase when they were pursued down a major highway by two resort employees in a second buggy.

The chase occurred last Monday when the five boys, aged between 10 and 16, took the buggy from the resort near the city of Darwin, the Northern Territory police force said in a statement on its Website.

After running along the main Stuart Highway, the chase ended when police arrived and the boys abandoned the buggy. One of them, a 10-year old, was arrested, but the others escaped.

The buggy was retrieved and returned to the resort undamaged, police said.

HAMBURG, N.Y. (AP) — Health officials shut down a suburban Buffalo restaurant after an inspector found employees butchering a dead deer inside the business. Erie County Health Department officials said they got a tip Friday about a dead deer in the China King restaurant in the town of Hamburg, just south of Buffalo.

An inspector soon arrived and saw the deer being butchered in the kitchen.

State health laws prohibit butchering an animal inside a restaurant.

Officials don’t know whether the deer had been killed by a hunter or a vehicle. They said there was no indication the deer meat was served to any customers.

The message on the restaurant’s answering machine Monday says it was closed because of “family emergencies.”

Drunk Driver Driving Drunk to Protest Drunk Driving Charges

October 27th, 2008 · No Comments

VIENNA (Reuters) –
An Austrian man, charged with drink driving, drove to a police station to complain about the charge whilst drunk, officials said Monday.

The 65-year-old had his driving licence and car keys first taken away from him Sunday after driving while over the alcohol limit in the northern city of Linz.

He then went home, picked up his spare car keys, went back to the abandoned car and drove to police headquarters to explain why he was unhappy with the charge.

"When the driver tried to show police officers what had happened the first time, they detected he was still under the influence of alcohol," police said in a statement. The driver was charged a second time.
